Starting a non-profit organization can be very stressful, time-consuming and requires some advance planning. We have provided the following Checklist to help you start and incorporate your non-profit.
- Begin by defining the purpose of your organization and the problem you are going to change or correct.
- Recruit a Board of Directors. Be sure to obtain solid commitment from all members.
- Draft your article of incorporations and Bylaws ( the organization’s rule book)
- File article or incorporation with your state (usually the office of the secretary of state)
- Develop a strategic plan or operational plan outlining services to be offered
- Develop a budget, fund development plan and record keeping system
- File for Internal Revenue Service 501C3 federal tax exemption by submitting IRS Form 1023 and consulting Publication 557.
- File for local and state tax exemptions
- Obtain appropriate permits and licenses to meet state, county and municipal charitable laws.
- Obtain employer identification number from the IRS by filing IRS from SS-4
- Obtain necessary insurance
